Nyrstar’s Port Pirie facility is one of the world’s largest primary lead smelting facilities and the third-largest silver producer.  Nyrstar embarked on an extensive project to modernise the plant and introduce world-leading technology into its smelter process.

Project Name: Port Pirie Transformation Project

Project Value: $500m +

Project Purpose: Expansion of brownfields smelter operation to introduce new technology to make the plant more flexible, efficient, and environmentally friendly.

Project Scope:

  • Ground improvement works including 700+ CFA piles
  • New furnace
  • New sulphuric acid plant
  • New coal grinding facility
  • Dredging of the river and construction of pump intake caisson
  • New electrical infrastructure and switchrooms

Our Role: Contracts Manager, responsible for the contracts team as well as overseeing a range of construction contracts for the project including:

  • Management of accommodation camp and facilities
  • CFA piling (2 -off contractors)
  • Civil contractor
  • Marine dredging
  • Pump station
  • SMP contractors for acid plant and balance of works
  • Provision of crane and other services
  • Refurbishment of existing ore storage bins
